What’s Your Bet?

1. bet

Years ago, someone asked me a question that completely changed the way I look at life.

They simply asked,

“Who’s responsible for your health?”

The answer was obvious.

I was.

That conversation stayed with me.

It changed how I approached nutrition.

It changed how I approached supplements.

It changed how I approached taking care of myself.

Because of that, I always found a way to invest in my health, because I realized no one else could do it for me.

Over time, I also realized that the very same question applies to another part of life.

Who’s responsible for your future?

There comes a point when we realize no one else is going to create, guarantee, or protect our future for us.

Not the government.

Not our employer.

Not the markets.

Not our financial advisor.

And many times, not even our own family.

Ultimately, the responsibility belongs to us.

Which brings me to a simple question.

What’s your bet?

How long will you have to work?

When will you be financially comfortable enough to retire?

When will be the best time for you to begin taking Social Security?

How much income will you need each month to live the life you hope for?

How many years would you ideally like to plan for?

What will Social Security look like when that day comes?

Will it still be there?

Will it be enough?

Or…

What if, instead of worrying about those questions, you had the freedom to plan what you will do during your golden years—with your children, grandchildren, friends, hobbies, and have the freedom to live life on your own terms?

When Social Security was introduced in 1935, the average life expectancy was dramatically different than it is today.

Many people now spend decades in retirement—something previous generations often never experienced.

That changes the perspective of what truly matters.

Today’s challenge isn’t simply living longer.

It’s that the cost of living continues to change.

  • Food.
  • Housing.
  • Utilities.
  • Healthcare.

The life we hope to enjoy tomorrow may cost far more than it does today.

That’s why understanding our options becomes so important.

Many people don’t realize that Social Security is more than simply a monthly check.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be:

  • Retirement benefits
  • Spousal benefits
  • Survivor benefits
  • Benefits for some divorced spouses
  • Advantages associated with delaying benefits

Understanding these options can make a meaningful difference.

When taking all of this into perspective, maybe asking:

“When is the ideal time to start taking Social Security?”

is not the first question we should ask ourselves.

Instead, how about if we start here:

“What are all of my options, and how do they apply to my unique situation?”

Because, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

The best decision depends on many factors, including your health, income needs, taxes, other retirement assets, longevity expectations, and the future you hope to build.

To me, knowledge comes before decisions.

There is something else that has also stood out to me.

Many people spend decades contributing to retirement accounts.

Yet surprisingly few have ever been shown what happens behind the scenes, or how lifetime income actually works.

Many people have never had the opportunity to learn about the various options available to them and understand how each one could create very different outcomes over the years ahead.

Most people simply don’t know what they don’t know.

And that isn’t anyone’s fault.

These conversations often never happened around our kitchen tables growing up.

They certainly didn’t happen around mine.

Perhaps the better question isn’t:

“What will Social Security look like for me?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“What kind of future do I want to build?”

One where each year brings more uncertainty?

Or one where each year brings more freedom, more choices, and greater peace of mind?

The future isn’t something we can predict.

But it is something we can prepare for.

Sometimes the greatest peace of mind comes from replacing assumptions with understanding.

So I’ll leave you with one final question.
